Mount Athos (Άγιον Όρος Ágion Óros 'Holy Mountain' / Αυτόνομη Μοναστική Πολιτεία Αγίου Όρους Autónomi Monastikí Politeía Agíou Órous 'Autonomous Monastic State of the Holy Mountain') is a Mediterranean mixed-system theocratic monastic autonomous state within the Hellenic Republic on the Athos peninsula of Chalkidiki, Central Macedonia — structurally distinctive globally as the only theocratic monastic republic operating within a European Union member state under EU Treaty special-status framework (Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union Declaration No. 4 attached to the Final Act of the Maastricht Treaty 1992, preserving Mount Athos's traditional status including the avaton (ἄβατον 'inaccessibility' / women-and-female-domestic-animals exclusion in effect since the Imperial decree of Constantine IX Monomachos in 1045 — making it the oldest continuously-operating ethnic-gender-exclusion framework in Europe, ~980 years), as one of only two state-level entities operating an internal-self-government-on-territory-of-EU-member-state framework alongside Madeira/Azores autonomy (but unique in its theocratic character), and as the spiritual centre of Orthodox Christian monasticism with 20 ruling monasteries and ~2,200 monks under canonical jurisdiction of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople (despite physical location in Greece).
