Assam (অসম in Assamese) is a North-eastern Indian Brahmaputra-Valley mixed common-law/Bodo/Karbi/Dimasa-customary-law constituent state of the Indian Republic — structurally distinctive globally as the only Indian state operating multi-tier Constitution Sixth Schedule tribal-autonomy framework with three constitutionally-recognised Autonomous Councils (Bodoland Territorial Council established via Bodoland Territorial Council Act 2003 covering ~8,970 km² Bodoland Territorial Region; Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council covering ~10,434 km² Karbi Anglong District; Dima Hasao Autonomous Council covering ~4,888 km² Dima Hasao District), as the parent state from which six modern Indian North-eastern states were carved out (Nagaland 1963 + Meghalaya 1972 + Arunachal Pradesh 1987 + Mizoram 1987 + Manipur 1972 + Tripura 1972 — Assam is the foundational parent state of the North-East), and as the central jurisdiction of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) 2019 framework — the only modern formal Indian-state-level citizenship-verification exercise (excluded ~1.9 million from final NRC list, generating substantial legal and constitutional controversy). Assam was historically the Ahom Kingdom 1228-1826 before British conquest. Assam comprises ~78,438 km² with a population of ~32 million. Family-law framework operates under a dual federal Indian common-law + Bodo/Karbi/Dimasa customary-law framework with customary law applied via Autonomous Council customary courts under Sixth Schedule framework. The Gauhati High Court (Guwahati seat) is the apex domestic appellate court for Assam (and historically for the broader North-east before separate state High Courts were established 2013+); final appellate jurisdiction lies with the Supreme Court of India. Assam is silent on 'parental alienation' as a statutory label. India is a Hague Convention 1980 signatory but not a party — Assam is governed by the Indian non-ratification status.
